April 26th 1987
Our first open meeting on the newly laid synthetic track at
Bannister was the Ace Awards Young Athletes Open. Notable
performances: P. Smith (Ealing & S) 11.2 U/17 100m, B.
OSullivan (Hillingdon) 23.2 U/17 200m, T. Hill (Barnet)
5.50 U/15 long jump.
June 16th 1987
Our first all ages open meeting took place on a Tuesday evening.
Top performers were T. Sylvester (QPH) 22.2 200m, P. Bagnall
(Sale) 1.53.8 800m and Kim McDonald (Hillingdon) 8.33.2 3000m.
July 21st 1987
Notable performances from Craig Mochrie (Leicester) 3.48.3 1500m
(in the C string as he arrived late!), Guy Perryman
(Brighton) 15.67 shot and Nicola Crowther (Milton Keynes) 55.9
ladies 400m.
August 18th 1987
New Zealander I. Collins ran a 21.8 200m. Junior Nick Smith
(Stamford) won the 800m in 1.51.3 just 1/10th second ahead of Old
Gaytonians Hamish McInnes. 23 runners broke 2 minutes for
the event. John Broe (Shaftesbury) ran 8.30.8 for the 3000m and
Sally-Ann Cox (Peterborough) won the ladies in 10.06.4.
April 24th 1988
Our second young athletes open featured a double sprint win by B.
OSullivan (Hillingdon) 11.0/22.5 U/17. Other notables: P.
Adams (Leicester) 14.49 U/17 shot, Gary Sunshine (Haringey) 3.00
U/15 pole vault, Malcolm Croad (Old Gayts) 52.22 U/15 hammer.
May 2nd 1988
Junior events for the season were sponsored by McVities. Best
junior performances came from Jamie Parsons (Harlow) 6.04.1
2000mSC, Gary Cook (WLHS) 67.96 hammer, ladies K. Bullen
(Birchfield) 12.7 100m, J. Jones (Basingstoke) 59.2 400m.
June 21st 1988
Neil Ovington won the 800m in 1.51.3. Hugh Brasher took the 3000m
in 8.26.7. Under 17 Sebastian Pampanini (Harrow School) threw
55.22 in the javelin.
July 19th 1988
Notable performances from R. Blayber (Swindon) 49.3 400m, Rob
Green (Hounslow) 3.53.9 1500m, J. Bossman (Reading) 14.9 110m
hurdles.
August 16th 1988
Matt Mileham (Haringey) threw 72.62 in the hammer for an Olympic
qualifying mark. Canadian junior J. Bowden won the 800m in
1.53.1. Pat McGrath (London Irish) won the 3000m in 8.24.6. Under
17 B. Moss ran a 14.9 100m hurdles and Jackie Cooper (Hounslow)
won the ladies 3000m in 9.43.3.
August 29th 1988
Notable performances: Clive Gilbey (Cambridge H) 1.51.3 800m, A.
Nelson (Haringey) 54.0 400m hurdles, Rhona Mackay (Leicester)
2.12.1 ladies 800m.
April 16th 1989
Sprint double win from Mark Collins (Old Gayts U/17) 11.2 and
23.3. Other notables: Malcolm Croad (Old Gayts U/17) 59.24
hammer, Craig McGill (Old Gayts U/15) 12.6 80m hurdles, Mark
Smith (Old Gayts U/15) 1.81 high jump, Tony Lashley (Old Gayts
U/13) 13.1 100m/27.1 200m.
June 20th 1989
American under 17 Chris Khedouri won the senior mile in 4.19.1.
July 18th 1989
Notable performances: K. ONeill (Leicester) 8.30.0
3000m, M. Stern (Huntingdon) running twice 14.4 and 14.5 junior
110m hurdles, Guy Perryman (Old Gayts) 16.58 shot.
August 13th 1989
The meeting incorporated our Inter-Club Trophy meeting which Old
Gayts won by 3 points from Hillingdon. Notable performances: D.
Grass (Luton) 1.54.3 junior 800m, Ian Harkness (Old Gayts)
14.21.1 5000m, Mark Roach (Old Gayts) 2.08 high jump, J. Tranter
(Notts) 48.23 discus, Neil Brunning (Cambridge H) 50.90 junior
discus, P. Morgan (Shaftesbury) 69.01 javelin.
April 8th 1990
Our final young athletes only meeting due to falling numbers.
Notable performances: Kirk Harries (Hillingdon) 14.6 100m
hurdles, Malcolm Croad (Old Gayts U/17) 61.28 hammer, Shane
Wareham (Old Gayts U/13) 2.27.2 800m.
July 29th 1990
Incorporating the final Inter Club trophy match which Old Gayts
again won. Dave Sweeney (Shaftesbury) won the 5000m in 14.57.6.
Junior Matt Davies threw 56.20 in the discus.
August 19th 1990
Several Japanese competitors attended in poor weather. Shigeki
Nakayama won the 1500m in 3.47.3 ahead of 2 of his compatriots
and Irish Cross Country champion John Downes. S. Yuba won the
800m in 1.54.5.
April 14th 1991
Ugandan Moses Melkiz won the 100m in 10.6. Junior Alistair Gidley
threw 55.30 in the javelin.
June 11th 1991
Jo White, competing in the mens 800, ran 2.07.0 on a rainy
evening.
July 9th 1991
New Zealander R. Lindroos won the 1500m in 3.54.7. P. Morgan
(Shaftesbury) threw 66.30 in the javelin. Due to falling numbers,
this was out last midweek open meeting.
August 18th 1991
Edward Betts won the 400m in 48.7 just ahead of Ray Chesworth in
the same time. Tony Bagolun (Woodford) won the 800m in 1.49.2 in
a fast race with Jason Dullforce (Enfield), Clive Gilby
(Cambridge H) and Larry Mangleshot (Woodford). 21 people broke 2
minutes. Nigel Flint (Old Gayts) won the 3000m in 8.24.2. Mark
Bishop (Havering) had a hurdles double of 15.0/52.9. On the field
S. Chapman (TVH) won the high jump in 2.10, Stuart Leader
(Enfield) 4.60 pole vault, M. Seeley (Shaftesbury) 7.02 long
jump, M. Hicks (Hounslow) 41.20 discus and Steve Pearson (Wolves)
60.02 hammer. Fresh from the European Juniors, Michelle Harries
(Parkside) won the ladies 1500m in 4.30.0. The new ladies hammer
was held, Diane Holden (Hounslow) won with 46.56.
June 14th 1992
Notable performers: Edward Betts (QPH) 1.52.7 800m, junior Mark
Smith (Old Gayts) 2.04 high jump, veteran Paul Dickenson
(Dacorum) 53.32 hammer, veteran Carolyn Oxton (Parkside) 5.24.4
mile, Diane Holden (Hounslow) 47.08 hammer.
July 5th 1992
Ethiopian Desta Asgedom won the 800m but unfortunately died in a
car accident a few weeks later, fellow countryman Alemayehu Roba
beat him in the 1500m in 3.56.4. Under 17 Alice Braham (Parkside)
won the 3000m in 10.47.1.
July 26th 1992
Jon Ridgeon had an outing in the flat 400m winning in 49.1.
August 9th 1992
Jon Ridgeon returned for a 50.7 400m hurdles, other notable
performances: Kent Ulyatt (Norfolk) 48.4 400m, Jason Dullforce
(Enfield) 1.51.9 800m, Curt Heywood (Canada) 4.80 pole vault,
Glen Smith (Solihull) 54.36 discus, Paul Morgan (Shaftesbury)
65.08 javelin, Debbie Callaway (Chelmsford) 51.36 ladies discus.
August 30th 1992
Belgraves Paul Edwards threw 18.23 in the shot. TVHs
Philip Daley ran a windy 10.7 100m. Under 17 Michael Keane ran a
14.3 100m hurdles. Junior Karl Edwards (Westbury) threw 58.56 in
the hammer.
May 30th 1993
The ladies pole vault was now on the program. Veteran Pat McNab
leapt 2.80 in the event.
July 11th 1993
Best performances from Ray Chesworth (Hillingdon) 48.9 400m,
Edward Betts (QPH) 53.4 400m hurdles, Veronica Boden (Trafford)
57.6 400m and 61.1 400m hurdles, Evette Finikin (Shaftesbury)
12.88 triple jump.
July 25th 1993
A mixture of New Zealand and Slovakian competitors arrived. Kiwi
Mark Keddell won the 200m in 22.1 and team mate Shaun Farrell won
the 400m in 48.5. Slovakian Frantisek Pitonak won the 400m
hurdles in 55.4, his compatriot Roman Ziga won the long jump in
6.81. Shaftesburys Neville Thompson won the discus with
53.08.
August 29th 1993
Paul Edwards won the shot with 19.09. Other performances: Steven
Smith (Newbury) 8.42.0 junior 3000m, Sean Jeremiah (Old Gayts)
14.4 under 17 100m hurdles, Andrew Kennaro (Walton) 53.2 400m
hurdles.
May 29th 1994
Leading performances: Rohan Samuel (Old Gayts) 10.7 100m and 22.4
200m, Stuart Taylor (Old Gayts) 1.54.1 junior 800m, Paul Field
(Met Police) 7.00 long jump.
July 10th 1994
Junior Mark Hylton (Windsor) won the 400m in 48.4. Mark Roach
(Old Gayts) won the high jump in 2.05 and Steve Whyte (Luton) won
the discus with 16.60. Stephen Pearson (Wolves) won the hammer
with 64.32. Sarah Moore (Bristol) won the ladies shot with 10.29
and hammer 45.96.
August 21st 1994
Good junior performances from Chris Wallace (Shaftesbury) 1.54.9
800m and Andy Coleman (Enfield) 3.54.5 800m. On the field Gary
Smith (Shaftesbury) won the long jump with 7.10.
September 4th 1994
Not many good performances at such a late meeting but Steve Whyte
(TVH) won the hammer with 61.86.
May 28th 1995
The first joint meeting with Parkside. Best performances from
Joanna Clark (Aldershot) 25.4 200m, Justin Sleath (Bracknell)
48.6 400m.
July 9th 1995
In a blanket finish in the 200m, Scott Herbert (Milton K),
Michael Ray (Windsor) and Justin Sleath (Bracknell) all ran 21.7.
Other performances: Christine Bloomfield (Essex Ladies) 24.4
200m, Mark Phills (Old Gayts) 10.5 100m, Jo Mersh (Essex Ladies)
56.8 400m, Richard Hunter (Gateshead) 14.8 110m hurdles, Ian
Parkinson (Wycombe) 4.00 under 17 pole vault, Simon Williams
(Enfield) 56.54 discus.
August 28th 1995
Best performances: Amin Koikai (Ilford) 8.45.6 3000m, Scott
Herbert (Milton K) 49.3 400m.
May 26th 1996
Good performances start to become fewer as the nineties wore on.
Best performances from Abiodun Oyeditan (QPH) 12.9 under 17
ladies 100m. Mark Phills (Old Gayts) had sprint wins in the 100m
and 200m, the latter in 22.0. Junior James Thie (Westbury) won
the 1500m in 4.00.7.
July 7th 1996
Oyeditan impoved her 100m time to 12.5 and won the 200m in 26.0.
Rowland Ifill (Loughborough) won the 400m in 48.8. Australian
Simon Rintel won the 800m in 1.54.9, in the ladies event over 50
Carloyn Oxton won in 2.21.6. Under 17 Luke Rosenberg (Old Gayts)
threw 47.04 in the discus.
September 1st 1996
German Berhard Schmidt leapt 7.38 in the long jump.
June 8th 1997
Best performances: Dalton Powell (Notts) 22.1 200m, Harvey
Cossell (GEC Avionics) 54.4 400m hurdles.
July 6th 1997
The Sylvia Parker Memorial Meeting. It was appropriate that this
meeting saw several notable performances from New Zealand
athletes especially on the field as Sylvia had been a Grade 1
official. Ian Winchester broke his countrys 23 year old
discus record with 63.32 and Beatrice Faumuina, who later won the
World Champs, threw 63.08. The Kiwis had several other notable
wins: Chantal Brunner 12.2 ladies 100m, Chris Donaldson 10.4 100m
and 21.3 200m, Glen Howard 2.21 high jump, Doug Pirini 4.20 pole
vault and Diggory Brooke 69.10 javelin. Elsewhere there were good
performances from the young Dunford brothers from Birchfield,
Edward leaping 5.29 in the under 13 long jump. To round the
meeting off there was a 4800 metres paarlauf won by Andrea
Whitcombe and Tony Gassett.
August 24th 1997
Notable performances in the long jump from Gary Smith
(Shaftesbury) 7.14 seniors, Edward Dunford (Birchfield) 5.46
under 13, Seamas Cassidy (Harrow) 4.52 under 11.
August 30th 1998
Too few spare weekend meant that we were down to one open meeting
for 1998. Akinola Lashore (Blackheath) equalled Kiwi Chris
Donaldsons 100m and 200m records (10.4/21.3). Duaine
Ladejo ran a 14.6 110m hurdles, leapt 7.14 in the long jump and
threw the javelin 44.38. Dean Macey threw the shot 14.46 and the
discus 45.74. Other notable performances from Sam Haughian
(Hounslow) 1.55.2 junior 800m, Ben Whitby (Hounslow) 3.54.6
1500m, Leanne Buxton (Brighton) 5.31 long jump, Graham Holder
(Shaftesbury) 60.85 hammer, Lyn Sprules (Hounslow) 60.03 hammer.
August 18th 1999
The meeting was retitled as the Frank Toovey Memorial Open in
memory of our recently deceased Club President. Notable
performances from Michael Haffner (Germany) 1.55.4 800m, Gary
Smith (Shaftesbury) 7.23 long jump, Scott Rider (Enfield) 15.77
shot, Stephen Pearson (Sale) 62.80 hammer, Edward Dunford
(Birchfield) 11.5 under 15 80m hurdles, 6.21 long jump and 14.82
shot, Clare Ridgley (Oxford Univ) 3.40 pole vault.
August 27th 2000
Meeting records came from the lady veterans and young age groups.
In the former category, Larissa Lowe (Windsor) leapt 3.10 in the
pole vault, Marilyn Rogers (Bedford) threw 19.55 discus and Linda
Fogg (Shaftesbury) 29.65 hammer. Top young performers were Rachel
Coombes (Aylesbury) 13.7 under 13 100m, Karen Harrison (Parkside)
6.78 under 13 shot, Ross Fairgrieve (Reading) 12.36 under 15
triple jump and Graham Pound (Harrow) 6.36 under 11 shot and
17.45 under 11 discus.
August 26th 2001
Meeting records came in the under 11 age group with performances
by Lewis Rouault (Harrow) 11.7 80m and James Charleston
(Abingdon) 1.56.5 600m. The only other record was a 14.75 shot
putt from Woodford's senior Maggie Lynes.
